Today I am going to show you one of my favorite places on the Costa Brava – Girona – Pyrenees: Els Hostalets d’en Bas, located in the Garrotxa, in the province of Girona.
If you like trekking and you’re one of those who repeat vacation spots, here are so many different routes that you cannot get bored. And I guarantee that if you like authentic and experiential trips, this is your trip. A luxury trip on the Costa Brava.
I often go with my family in a van, we spend the night in the same village of Hostalets d’en Bas in a very nice parking lot at the entrance of the village.
The atmosphere of the authentic small-town of La Vall d’en Bas deserves a lot to be experienced, especially early in the morning. The locals go to buy bread at the Bataller bakery, one of those hard to find nowadays, with handmade bread and traditional “coques” of the place. You have to go early to find some bread and coca, so if you arrive around 10am and decide to go to the bakery, forget about buying bread. Keep that in mind. The bread and the cocas are unbeatable ..
Then, the town people, go to one of the two bars that are open at the entrance of the town (restaurant Teixeda). You will only find locals enjoying an authentic breakfast in the area: sausages table, toast with tomato, a glass of wine.
After buying bread and enjoying a unique breakfast, you can now prepare your sticks for walking, the gps navigator on your mobile and your backpack with a little water, fruit and something to eat.
The routes start in the same town or a couple of km from the town. For this route that I tell you today it is advisable to take the car to the starting point.
The route is wonderful. This circular route starts after the Molí Vell house in Hostalets d’en Bas where there is a junction with a small car park to leave the car.
It is a route full of interesting trails, quite shady, so it is perfectly possible to do in summer. Along the route we will find some gifts of nature: gorgas and waterfalls such as the Ansat, Cristians and Olla (the jewel in the crown), Fontiques and Hostelot until you reach the Ral road, at the height of the Les Marrades fountain.
These waterfalls are full of water in the rainy or spring season. Waterfall of l’Olla: essential stop to take one of the best baths of the year with fresh water in a unique place.
Once you have past the gorgas, there are trails to climb in the middle of the forest, it is great. The sticks will help you. Under one of theparts of the road and on the right there is a milestone with an inscription that says “LaudetusNomenDomini”, the coat of arms of the city of Vic in 1731.
Before reaching the end of the road, we will find the road sign to the Bandoleros Mine, you can go to see the favorite hiding place of the bandits who assaulted the users of the Camino Ral. Then you will find the Mirador del Boixos. The view from this point is admirable. You have an unbeatable view of the Vall d’en Bas, Sant Miquel de Castelló, the Puigsacalm, Olot and a large part of the Pyrenees.
A fun, interesting route, to enjoy water and nature, do a little sport and share with your family and friends unique moments on the Costa Brava – Girona.Once back, a good plan is to eat a good entrecote in the Teixeda restaurant. You can eat really well at an unbeatable price (a dish for each one, drink and dessert cost us less than 40 euros). Time of route: 3h30 walking quietly with a baby in the back and some stops to eat something, photos etc
Route: 8.18 km
Slope: 627m rise / 619 m drop
Difficulty: moderate
